The Kind of Design Leader I’m Trying To Be

Collage of a man in graduation attire with cosmic elements, the word ‘WEAR,’ and dancing children.
  • I believe in teams, not heroes.
  • I believe we’re here to solve problems, not chase innovation.
  • I believe in slow clarity before fast answers.

“I want to be a manager like the great ones I had. It’s about relationships.”
  • Design is listening.
  • Design is shaping.
  • Design is real once it’s in the world.
  • Design is holding space for uncertainty long enough for something real to show up.
Good work happens when:
  • The designer is open to exploring.
  • The constraints are healthy.
  • The feedback is kind but honest.
  • The team feels safe enough to take swings
  • I don’t lead by knowing more, cause I don’t.
  • I lead by creating air for people to think, move, and grow.
  • I ask questions to allow my team to think and solve on their own.
  • I don’t like sticky notes or whiteboards those are just data points.
  • I like when product, eng, and design sit in the same conversation, not different meetings.
  • I like living documenting.
  • You don’t protect the craft by holding it tight.
  • You protect it by inviting others into it, and teaching them how to care.
At the end of the day:
  • We’re not building perfection.
  • We’re building systems for real people.
  • Having fun.
